Hippo Haven: Indian Billionaire’s Sanctuary Offers Hope

In a remarkable turn of events, the descendants of Pablo Escobar's hippos may find a new home in India. Anant Ambani, son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has offered to transport 80 of these hippos to his private zoo, Vantara, located in Gujarat.

The story of Escobar's hippos is a fascinating one. Originally imported from sub-Saharan Africa by the Colombian drug lord for his personal zoo, these herbivores were left to roam free after his death in 1993. Over the years, their population has grown, causing environmental concerns in Colombia.

The hippos, now considered a menace, face a grim fate as Colombian authorities plan to cull them to control their numbers. However, Ambani's offer presents a potential lifeline. He argues that as sentient beings, the hippos deserve a chance at a safe and humane solution.

Vantara, a sanctuary for over 150,000 animals, including endangered species, has faced its share of controversies. Allegations of illegal wildlife sourcing and complicity in trafficking have been raised, but an investigation by India's Supreme Court found no evidence of wrongdoing.

The logistical challenges of transporting these massive animals, each weighing around two tonnes, are significant. Ambani's previous attempt in 2023 faced hurdles, but he remains determined. He has directly appealed to the Colombian government for a scientifically led translocation.

The hippos' journey to India would be a complex and costly endeavor, estimated at over $4 million. However, it could provide a unique solution to a growing environmental issue in Colombia and offer a new chapter in the story of Escobar's hippos.

As the proposal unfolds, questions arise about Vantara's suitability for the hippos, given their non-native status in India. The sanctuary's ability to accommodate and care for such a large number of these animals is under scrutiny.
