Israel-Ukraine Diplomatic Row Over Alleged Russian Grain Shipment

A rare diplomatic dispute has unfolded between Israel and Ukraine, with Kyiv requesting the seizure of a vessel it believes is transporting grain stolen from Russian-occupied areas. This incident has brought tensions between the two nations into the spotlight.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that a vessel carrying grain, allegedly looted by Russia, had arrived at an Israeli port. Ukraine's prosecutor general, Ruslan Kravchenko, issued a statement on Telegram, requesting Israeli authorities to detain the vessel, conduct a thorough investigation, and question the crew.

The vessel in question, Panormitis, sailing under a Panamanian flag, was reportedly heading towards the port of Haifa. Ukraine's foreign ministry also raised concerns about another ship, Abinsk, which they claim was carrying stolen grain and was allowed to unload and depart despite their objections.

Israel's foreign minister, Gideon Saar, refuted Ukraine's claims, accusing Kyiv of 'Twitter diplomacy' and lacking evidence. Saar emphasized that the formal petition submitted by Ukraine is under review by the relevant authorities.

The management company of the vessel, based in Greece, denied the allegations, stating that the cargo originated from Russia. This incident highlights the delicate balance Israel has maintained in its relations with both Ukraine and Russia, primarily providing humanitarian aid and refraining from supplying weapons or imposing sanctions.

Kyiv has consistently accused Russia of stealing grain from occupied territories and selling it internationally. The Israeli media outlet Haaretz reported that Israel has been purchasing grain allegedly looted by Russia for at least two years. The European Union is now considering sanctions on Israeli individuals and entities that may be aiding Russia in this matter.

The EU's foreign affairs spokesperson, Anouar El Anouni, acknowledged the reports and expressed concern over the situation. This diplomatic row underscores the complexities of international relations and the challenges of addressing alleged war crimes and economic sanctions.
