US West Shatters High-Temperature Records in Historic March Heatwave

Some western states in the US are experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching record-breaking highs. California, Nevada, and Arizona are among the states affected, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing heat warnings and advisories.

The NWS Los Angeles heat advisory warned residents of a high risk for heat illness, with temperatures expected to reach 108F in some areas. Palm Springs, located about 100 miles east of Los Angeles, is expected to reach a high of 108F on Thursday.

In Arizona, Phoenix set a record-high overnight low temperature for 19 March of 69F, with daytime highs expected to top out at around 105F. The NWS Phoenix office predicted that daily records will be broken each day through Sunday, with a peak expected for Friday.

Several daily heat records were already broken on Tuesday across more than a dozen areas in Los Angeles, according to the NWS. Although not as scorching, the heat has also reached northern California, with San Francisco facing a moderate heat risk.

Temperatures are expected to cool next week, with Los Angeles dipping around 80F. Some western national parks, such as White Sands in New Mexico and the Grand Canyon in Arizona, have urged people to check the forecast before heading out.

Park officials warned hikers to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, which they identify as 10am to 4pm. Hiking trails at Lake Mead national recreation area were closed amid the heatwave, according to a notice from the National Park Service.

The severe heatwave has prompted alerts and closures across the region, with residents advised to take precautions to stay safe.
