Pahlaj Nihalani’s Legacy: Unsung Hero of Indian Cinema

The recent passing of Pahlaj Nihalani, a veteran producer and former chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), has sparked a wave of tributes, but with a surprising twist. While some focus on his controversial tenure at CBFC, a heartwarming story has emerged, shedding light on his behind-the-scenes support for filmmakers.

Senior industry member Rajesh Vasani shared an exclusive account with Bollywood Hungama, detailing how Nihalani's intervention saved Ranbir Kapoor's film, 'Jagga Jasoos', from a significant penalty.

In 2017, just days before the film's release, Nihalani received a late-night visit from Rishi Kapoor. Kapoor explained that his son, Ranbir, needed to submit the film to Disney immediately, but the post-production work was incomplete. Nihalani, understanding the urgency, agreed to screen the film the very next morning.

Nihalani's quick action didn't end there. He guided Kapoor through the online application process and assembled a team to screen the film at the NFDC preview theatre in Worli. By noon, the Examining Committee had approved the film without any cuts, and by 4:00 pm, the censor certificate was ready, saving Ranbir Kapoor from a hefty penalty.

Nihalani's assistance was not motivated by personal gain. When asked if he would request a favor in return, he firmly stated that he acted out of a sense of duty to support fellow industry members.

To honor his legacy, Rajesh Vasani has taken the initiative to put up hoardings across Mumbai, celebrating Nihalani's achievements. This unique tribute highlights the unsung hero behind the scenes, ensuring the smooth release of films.
