Israel-Hezbollah Conflict Escalates: Airstrikes on Beirut Suburbs

In a dramatic development, Israel has carried out airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, intensifying its war with Hezbollah. This attack represents the most severe escalation since the mid-April ceasefire. The airstrikes targeted two residential buildings, resulting in casualties and injuries, according to Lebanon's state news agency.

The Israeli Prime Minister's office justified the strikes as a response to Hezbollah's rocket fire into Israeli territory. However, Hezbollah has not claimed responsibility for the attacks, which Israel claims to have intercepted. The airstrikes caused significant damage, leading to a mass exodus from the southern suburbs.

This incident follows a rejected ceasefire proposal, with Hezbollah refusing to agree to any deal that does not include a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and an end to Israeli strikes across the country. The US, which had previously urged Israel to refrain from striking Beirut, was reportedly informed about the latest strike.

The conflict in Lebanon began on March 2nd when Hezbollah retaliated against the killing of Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, by launching rockets at Israel. This triggered an Israeli invasion, resulting in over 3,600 Lebanese casualties and the deaths of at least 30 Israeli soldiers and civilians.

The ongoing skirmishes have complicated US-Iran negotiations, as Iran insists on Lebanon's inclusion in a broader ceasefire agreement. US President Donald Trump, in a recent interview, stated that he was not demanding Lebanon's inclusion but hinted at a potential military escalation if a deal was not reached soon.

Prior to the Beirut strikes, Israel issued an evacuation order for most of Tyre, a major city in southern Lebanon, citing imminent strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure. The Lebanese army, which is not a party to the conflict, has also suffered casualties, with two soldiers and an army captain killed in an Israeli strike on their vehicle.

As negotiations continue in Washington, the latest Israeli airstrikes on Beirut raise questions about the prospects for a comprehensive ceasefire. Hezbollah's demands and the potential impact on regional stability remain key factors in this complex situation.
