Magnus the Walrus: A Journey from Scotland to Norway

The story of Magnus, the wandering walrus, has delighted people across Scotland and Norway. This young male walrus, named Magnus, embarked on an extraordinary journey, captivating locals and visitors alike.

Magnus first made headlines when he was sighted in Orkney, Scotland, on April 16th. He quickly became a local celebrity as he toured the north-east coast, drawing crowds wherever he went. His estimated 2.5-meter frame and playful antics, including vigorous itching and accidental rolls off harbor walls, entertained spectators.

Walruses are not frequent visitors to Scottish shores, but sightings have increased in recent years, raising concerns about the impact of climate change on their Arctic habitat. Magnus, an adolescent, is part of a rare phenomenon where young walruses venture beyond their usual range, possibly due to climate-induced changes.

His journey took him from Orkney to the Moray coast, where he was spotted snoozing on piers and pontoons. The police even had to intervene to manage the crowds at Lossiemouth marina. Magnus then swam to various locations along the coast, including Macduff, Fraserburgh, and Findochty, where locals and visitors were thrilled to see him.

One resident, Katie Wilson, witnessed Magnus sunbathing on a pontoon in Findochty. She described the excitement of her three-year-old daughter and other children who were in awe of the unusual visitor. Magnus's journey continued, and he was even spotted swimming alongside students from Gordonstoun, King Charles's alma mater, in Hopeman harbour.

After his Scottish adventure, Magnus embarked on a 400-mile swim across the North Sea to Norway. A local birdwatcher, Åge Jakobsen, raised the alert, and Magnus was found resting on a floating dock near Stavanger. Despite appearing tired, he seemed to be enjoying the sun.

The Orkney Marine Mammal Research Initiative confirmed that walrus sightings in Orkney are genuinely rare, with only two other instances in the last decade. They attributed these appearances to young walruses exploring new territories, possibly due to climate change.

Magnus's journey highlights the fascinating behavior of these Arctic animals and the potential impact of environmental changes on their habits. His story has brought attention to the importance of marine conservation and the need to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats.
