French Singer Patrick Bruel Faces Sexual Assault Charges

The French singer and actor Patrick Bruel has been charged with rape and sexual assault, marking a significant development in the French #MeToo movement. This case has sent shockwaves through the French music industry, with Bruel being a prominent figure in pop culture since the 1990s.

The 67-year-old was placed under formal investigation for various allegations, including rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. The Nanterre prosecutor's office revealed that Bruel was questioned regarding nine alleged victims between 2000 and 2019. Additionally, complaints from 13 other women, dating back to 1992, have been added to the file, despite potentially exceeding the statute of limitations.

Bruel's lawyers have issued a strong denial of all charges, and the singer has been released on bail. His rise to fame in the 1990s was marked by top-selling albums and a dedicated fan base, often referred to as 'bruelmania'. He was a regular on TV chat shows and even ventured into the world of poker, becoming a world champion in 1998.

However, recent months have seen a series of accusations against Bruel published by Mediapart and Elle magazine, detailing alleged assaults from the 1990s. Despite his denials, feminist campaigners and city mayors urged him to cancel his concert tour, which he eventually did.

The case against Bruel includes testimony from Daniela Elstner, the director of Unifrance, a cultural institution promoting French cinema globally. Additionally, a new complaint has been filed by lawyer Myriam Guedj Benayoun, alleging the attempted rape of a 19-year-old woman during a music video shoot in 2000. Bruel's lawyers maintain their client's innocence.

This case follows other high-profile sexual assault claims against French celebrities, including actor Gérard Depardieu, who received a suspended sentence for assaulting two women on a film set in 2021. Depardieu also faces charges of raping and assaulting actor Charlotte Arnould in 2018, which he denies.
