Antwerp Apartment Fire: Five Dead, Many Rescued
Firefighters Battle Blaze in Antwerp
A fire in Antwerp’s Linkeroever district has claimed at least five lives, according to police, with many others rescued from the 10-storey apartment block.
The fire, which broke out just before 10:00 (08:00 GMT) on Wednesday, saw thick smoke billow from the eighth floor, with dramatic footage showing residents clambering to safety.
A Complex Firefighting Operation
Antwerp fire brigade spokeswoman Marie de Clercq described the fire as “complex” due to poor visibility and thick smoke, making it challenging for firefighters to navigate the building.
Firefighters went door-to-door, searching for potential victims, as the smoke spread rapidly, hampering evacuation efforts.
Resident Geert Dewulf recounted how he and his family were forced to wait on their balcony for rescue, as the smoke prevented them from leaving their flat.
A Community Rallies Together
The fire has brought the community together, with residents offering support and assistance to those affected.
One man, whose in-laws were successfully evacuated, shared his relief, saying, “We’re just glad they’re safe.” However, he also expressed sadness at the loss of their cat, which they were unable to save.
Police have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but witnesses reported ongoing work on the building’s roof.
A City’s Resilience
Antwerp’s resilience is on full display as the city comes together to support those impacted by the fire.
Prime Minister Bart De Wever expressed his condolences and support, stating, “My thoughts are with the victims and those evacuated in this terrible fire.” The city’s response highlights the strength and unity of its residents in the face of adversity.
