European Unity in the Face of Russian Threats
In a powerful statement, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned Russia's threats against Baltic States, asserting that any threat against one member is a threat against the entire European Union. This comes as Lithuania's president and prime minister were rushed to underground bunkers, and residents of Vilnius sought shelter after a drone intrusion.
The incident follows a NATO fighter jet shooting down a suspected Ukrainian drone over Estonia. EU leaders, including von der Leyen, NATO's Mark Rutte, and Poland's Donald Tusk, have warned against Russia's assertive stance towards the Baltics.
Meanwhile, Finland is investigating a Finnish company for allegedly exporting trucks and trailers worth $20 million to Russia, violating sanctions imposed due to the war in Ukraine. The customs agency found the vehicles were customs cleared into Russia, and the company's owner and employees face charges.
Additionally, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized Israel for the treatment of Gaza flotilla activists, while French lawmakers approved President Macron's former chief of staff to govern the central bank.
The European Commission also addressed the US and UK's decisions to relax sanctions on Russian crude oil, stating they remain committed to their sanctions on Russian oil and gas imports.
