Claire’s UK Stores to Close, Impacting 1,000 Jobs
Claire's, a beloved jewellery chain, is set to close its doors in the UK, impacting approximately 1,000 jobs. This decision comes just months after the company fell into administration, with staff being asked to pack up the final stock and equipment.
The remaining outlets will officially close on Tuesday, following a series of closures in recent weeks. Administrators at Kroll confirmed that all stores ceased trading on Monday, and employees have been informed of their redundancy. Over 100 shops are expected to shut down.
Claire's journey has been challenging, with the company entering administration in January 2023. This came after a rescue deal in August 2022, where Modella Capital saved about 1,300 jobs by acquiring 154 stores. However, the remaining 145 branches were closed by administrators in November 2022.
The recent closures include stores in Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor, with Swindon closing last weekend. Reports suggest that stores in Romford and Chester also displayed closing down signs.
The UK arm of Claire's faced difficulties due to the rise of online retailers like Amazon and social media platforms like TikTok. The company's US and Canadian branches filing for bankruptcy for the second time in seven years further exacerbated the situation.
Claire's, founded in 1961, has been a staple in British shopping centres and high streets, particularly popular among teenagers. With over 2,750 stores across North America and Europe, the company's closure in the UK marks a significant change in the retail landscape.
