A Step-Sibling Romance Takes Over TikTok
Scroll through TikTok and you’ll find a thriving community of fans creating and sharing content about fictional relationships. From fan edits to AI-generated posters, these passionate fans are driving the success of young adult romance stories, often adapted from bestselling novels.
One such phenomenon is the #BookTok trend, with over 80 million posts on TikTok, showcasing the power of online fandom.
From Wattpad to the Big Screen
The latest addition to this trend is Your Fault: London, a film based on the bestselling Culpables trilogy by Spanish author Mercedes Ron. The story follows Noah, who moves to London after her mother’s marriage, and falls for her step-brother, Nick.
The film stars Asha Banks and Matthew Broome, who acknowledge the intense fandom surrounding the franchise. “The fans are the reason the films are so successful,” says Banks. This success can be traced back to the trilogy’s origins on the reading platform Wattpad, where it gained a massive following before being adapted into films.
A Global Phenomenon
The original Spanish-language films, titled Your Fault, were a huge hit, reaching over 100 million viewers worldwide, according to Nicole Clemens, head of UK and international originals at Amazon MGM Studios. The films’ popularity extended far beyond Spain, with over 90% of viewers coming from other countries.
A New Chapter in London
The English-language version, Your Fault: London, is the second installment in the trilogy, following My Fault: London and preceding Our Fault: London. The story picks up as Noah starts university and Nick focuses on his career, with new relationships and old conflicts adding to the drama.
The actors, Banks and Broome, appreciate the fans’ enthusiasm but also find the online attention overwhelming at times. They navigate this by supporting each other and occasionally disconnecting from social media.
A Tale of Toxic Romance?
The series has sparked debates about its portrayal of toxic relationships, as Noah and Nick’s romance is marked by jealousy and conflict. However, the actors argue that the films showcase the consequences of these behaviors and emphasize the importance of healthy communication.
The film’s success lies in its ability to engage fans and spark conversations, offering a unique blend of romance, drama, and self-discovery.
Your Fault: London is now available on Prime Video, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in this captivating story.
