Wimbledon 2023: Serena Williams’ Comeback, Draws & British Hopes
Serena Williams’ Grand Return
American tennis legend Serena Williams is set to make her highly-anticipated singles comeback at Wimbledon, facing Australia’s Maya Joint in the first round. Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, has been granted a wildcard entry at 44 years old, marking her return to competitive singles tennis since the 2022 US Open.
Joint, ranked 53rd, made her Wimbledon main-draw debut last year but fell in the first round. Williams’ draw is a manageable one, with a potential second-round match against 29th seed Alexandra Eala and a possible third-round encounter with reigning champion Iga Swiatek.
British Hopes and Challenges
British tennis fans have plenty to look forward to, with a strong contingent of home players in the singles draws. Emma Raducanu, the British number one and 30th seed, will start against Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic, but a potential third-round clash with top seed Aryna Sabalenka looms.
In the men’s draw, Jack Draper faces a tough opening match against American sixth seed Taylor Fritz. Draper, returning from injury, has reached the Eastbourne semi-finals, but his Wimbledon draw is less than ideal. Cameron Norrie, the highest-ranked Briton at 26th, starts against American qualifier Michael Zheng and could face a challenging third-round match against Canadian third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Twelve British players have been awarded wildcards, including six men and six women, but there are concerns over Raducanu’s fitness due to a shin injury. The draw has also been unkind to some, with Draper facing a difficult path and Toby Samuel taking on French Open semi-finalist Jakub Mensik.
Defending Champions and Notable Absences
Reigning women’s champion Iga Swiatek will begin her title defence against American Taylor Townsend. The men’s defending champion, Jannik Sinner, starts against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic, aiming to retain his title despite not playing since his French Open exit in May.
Notably, Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner’s close rival, is absent due to a wrist injury. The draw ceremony, lasting 25 minutes, had everyone waiting for one name: Serena Williams. Her return adds an extra layer of excitement to the tournament.
A Tough Draw for Home Players
The draw has presented a challenging path for many British players. Draper, in particular, faces a steep climb, while Raducanu’s potential second-round opponent, former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, adds to the difficulty.
Despite the challenges, the British contingent is determined to make its mark. With a mix of experienced veterans and rising stars, Wimbledon 2023 promises to be an exciting showcase of talent and determination.
