Vashu Bhagnani’s Bold Revelations: Unveiling the Truth Behind Coolie No 1’s Production
Producer Vashu Bhagnani, in a virtual press conference from Dubai, opened up about his legal battle with Ramesh Taurani and shared intriguing details about the production of the 2020 comedy film, Coolie No 1.
Bhagnani, who is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Ramesh Taurani over the film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, took the opportunity to address his involvement in Coolie No 1. He revealed that he suffered a significant financial loss of around Rs. 27 crores on the film, despite being just a namesake producer.
According to Bhagnani, director David Dhawan had complete control over the production and expenses, and he paid Dhawan a substantial amount of Rs. 70 crores to make the film. However, Bhagnani felt that this amount was not justified by Dhawan's work.
In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Bhagnani disclosed that he had initially wanted to shoot Coolie No 1 in London, UK, where he would have received a substantial subsidy. However, David Dhawan declined, citing concerns that the media would ridicule the film if they showed a Coolie in London. Interestingly, a portion of the film was later shot in Bangkok, indicating a double standard in Dhawan's decision-making.
Bhagnani further emphasized that his financial losses were not limited to Coolie No 1. He mentioned that whenever he stepped back and allowed others to take over the production, he faced financial setbacks. This trend was evident in his experiences with the films Ganapath (2023) and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (2024).
The producer's revelations shed light on the challenges and complexities of the film industry, where financial risks and creative decisions can significantly impact the success of a project. Bhagnani's willingness to speak openly about his experiences provides valuable insights for aspiring filmmakers and industry professionals.
