Pakistan-Afghanistan Conflict: US Supports Pakistan’s Right to Defend Against Taliban
In a significant development, the United States has expressed support for Pakistan's right to defend itself against Taliban attacks from Afghanistan. This comes after Pakistan launched airstrikes on major cities in Afghanistan, including Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia, in response to alleged Taliban-backed militant activities.
The Taliban government in Afghanistan has responded by offering to resolve the dispute through dialogue. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahi emphasized their commitment to peaceful negotiations, stating that they have always sought to resolve issues through talks.
The recent airstrikes by Pakistan were a reaction to Afghan forces attacking Pakistani border troops, which Afghanistan claims was retaliation for previous Pakistani airstrikes. Pakistan has accused the Taliban government of harboring militant groups and allying with India, a regional rival.
The US, a key ally of Pakistan, has taken a firm stance on the issue. Allison Hooker, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, expressed condolences for the lives lost and affirmed support for Pakistan's defensive actions. This stance is notable as the US considers the Afghan Taliban, which regained power in 2021, a 'terrorist' group.
The European Union and the United Kingdom have also responded, urging both sides to de-escalate the situation. The EU's high representative for foreign affairs, Kaja Kallas, called for an immediate halt to hostilities and warned of potential regional implications. Kallas emphasized the need for dialogue and respect for international law, especially regarding the protection of civilians.
The conflict has raised concerns among the international community, with calls for a peaceful resolution. The recent escalation highlights the complex dynamics between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and their global allies, as efforts are made to prevent further violence and find a diplomatic solution.
