UK Air Traffic Outage: Transport Secretary Demands Answers

Technical Failure Causes Widespread Disruption

A technical glitch in the UK’s air traffic control system has caused significant disruption, with over 2,000 flights cancelled and passengers facing travel chaos. The Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, has ordered an independent investigation into the incident, which occurred on Tuesday and lasted for four hours.

Nats Under Scrutiny

The system, operated by Nats, a public-private partnership, went down, affecting flights across the country. Nats, which is 49% owned by the government, has apologised for the disruption, marking its third major technical fault in three years.

Alexander met with Nats’ boss, Martin Rolfe, who assured her that a cyberattack was not the cause. However, the Transport Secretary emphasised that the issue was not unavoidable and called for a thorough review.

Airlines Demand Accountability

Airlines UK, representing the country’s carriers, has expressed serious concerns over the incident, stating that it is the third major system failure in three years. Tim Alderslade, CEO of Airlines UK, highlighted the need for accountability, suggesting that the Civil Aviation Bill could address this issue.

Passenger Rights and Redress

The UK Civil Aviation Authority has reminded airlines of their responsibilities to passengers, but also noted that compensation may not be applicable due to the ‘extraordinary circumstances’ of the Nats outage.

As passengers navigate the aftermath of the disruption, the focus shifts to the resilience of Nats’ systems and the need for consumer redress. The government’s confidence in Rolfe remains, despite calls for his resignation from airlines like Wizz Air and Ryanair.

With an independent review underway, the aviation industry is working to restore normal operations and ensure a swift recovery from this unexpected setback.
