Trump Backs Kurdish Offensive in Iran: A New Chapter in Regional Politics

In a recent interview with Reuters, President Trump expressed his support for a Kurdish rebellion in Iran, stating that he would welcome such an initiative. This statement comes amidst reports of the US President's outreach to Kurdish leaders in Iraq to facilitate an Iranian Kurdish ground offensive.

The White House confirmed Trump's communication with Kurdish leaders but refuted claims of a coordinated plan for an armed uprising. Instead, they emphasized his commitment to engaging with regional partners and allies.

The Kurdish region of Iraq, particularly Erbil, has been a target of Iranian drone and missile attacks since the war began. Iran's Kurdish population, primarily residing in the west, represents a significant ethnic minority, mirroring similar demographics in Iraq, Syria, and Turkey.

Mustafa Hijri, leader of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), has urged Iranian soldiers and personnel to defect from the Iranian army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This call for desertion aims to preserve lives and distance individuals from the regime's military and repressive forces.

Historically, the US has encouraged Kurdish autonomy movements, only to withdraw support when political circumstances shift. Critics caution that escalating ethnic tensions in Iran could lead to a civil war, further destabilizing the region.

Iran's Press TV reported IRGC missile and drone strikes on anti-Iran terrorist group headquarters in Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has condemned these attacks while denying involvement in any offensive against Iran. Instead, they advocate for peace and stability in the region.

Despite the US-led strikes and President Trump's appeals for an uprising, there has been a notable absence of significant protests in Iran since the war's commencement.
