Trump-Iran Tensions Escalate: Ceasefire at Risk

The US-Iran peace process faces a significant hurdle as President Donald Trump rejects Iran's response to a US peace plan, calling it 'totally unacceptable'. This development comes amid rising tensions in the Gulf region, with drone strikes and military posturing threatening the month-old ceasefire.

Iranian negotiators, through Pakistani mediators, presented a counter-proposal to the US peace memorandum. The proposal emphasized the lifting of US sanctions, the end of the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, and guarantees against future attacks on Iran.

The US, however, had different expectations. Their peace proposal, presented a week ago, aimed for a 14-point understanding to reopen the Strait and set the stage for talks on Iran's nuclear program. This included a 20-year moratorium on nuclear enrichment, the transfer of highly enriched uranium (HEU) overseas, and the dismantling of nuclear facilities.

Iran's counter-proposal, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, suggested a shorter moratorium, partial export of HEU, and refusal to dismantle facilities. This response did not sit well with President Trump, who took to his online platform, Truth Social, to express his dissatisfaction.

The situation is further complicated by regional dynamics. Drone incursions were reported in the airspace of the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, and a drone attack on a ship off the coast of Qatar. Iran's deputy foreign minister warned against a French-British effort to secure maritime security in the Strait, while the UK and France prepare for a multinational meeting to restore trade flows.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point, with Iran insisting on coordination and tolls for passing ships. The US military, in response, has blockaded Iranian ports, turning back commercial vessels and disabling others.

As tensions rise, the ceasefire hangs in the balance. President Trump, under pressure to maintain peace, faces a delicate task before his visit to China, which is advocating for an end to hostilities and the reopening of the Strait.
