Trevor Nelson: BBC DJ’s Health Break After 30 Years

Celebrating 30 Years at the BBC

Trevor Nelson, the iconic BBC DJ and presenter, has announced a temporary hiatus from his work commitments due to health concerns. Nelson, who recently celebrated 30 years at the BBC, has been a driving force in promoting black music in the UK.

The 62-year-old, known for his love of R&B, soul, and hip-hop, shared the news on Instagram, assuring his followers that he is focusing on his recovery.

A Career in Music

Nelson’s career began with the Madhatter sound system, hosting warehouse parties, before joining pirate radio station Kiss FM in London. He later became a director when the station went legal.

His friendship with Soul II Soul frontman Jazzie B led to the opening of a second Soul II Soul shop in London. Nelson’s passion for music extended to his work as a promotions manager at Cooltempo (EMI Records), where he supported acts like Arrested Development and Gang Starr.

BBC and Beyond

In 1996, after a decade with Kiss FM, Nelson joined BBC Radio 1 to present Rhythm Nation. His talent was recognized with two best DJ awards at the Mobo Awards, and he later hosted the ceremony alongside Kelis and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.

Nelson’s career expanded into television, presenting MTV’s black music shows The Lick and The Lick Chart. The BBC then gave him his own shows, Trevor Nelson’s Urban Choice and The Lowdown.

Nelson has also hosted stages at the Notting Hill Carnival for Radio 1 and released compilation albums. His work has been celebrated at the Television and Radio Industries Club (Tric) Awards, where he received a special prize this week.

Support and Well-Wishes

Messages of support have poured in from fellow musicians and broadcasters. Artists like Stormzy, Mel B, Beverley Knight, and Jools Holland have expressed their love and encouragement.

Fellow DJs and presenters, including Clara Amfo, Tony Blackburn, and Vernon Kay, have also sent their well-wishes. Kay, on his show, praised Nelson’s positive attitude and determination to face his health challenge head-on.

The BBC’s director of music, Lorna Clarke, expressed the organization’s support, saying, “Everyone at BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 1Xtra wishes Trevor a very speedy recovery.”

As Nelson takes a break to focus on his health, his fans and colleagues eagerly await his return to the airwaves.
