Slovakia Shuts Border with Ukraine, Cites Russian Threat
Slovakia has taken a significant step in response to the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine, temporarily closing its border crossings with the country. This decision comes as top regional leaders, including Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy, gathered in Bucharest to discuss European security and reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine's defense.
The meeting in Bucharest comes amidst a series of Russian drone attacks on Ukraine, with over 800 drones launched and at least six people killed. Zelenskyy took to social media to provide updates, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the attack and the need for global action.
Zelenskyy's message highlights Russia's strategic timing, suggesting that the attacks are aimed at disrupting the political atmosphere during US President Donald Trump's visit to China. He urges the international community to recognize Russia's true intentions and apply pressure to end the aggression.
The situation has prompted neighboring countries to take precautions. Slovakia's decision to close its borders is a response to the anticipated large-scale attack on Uzhhorod and the Zakarpattia region, with attacks reported as close as 50 km from the Slovak border. Poland also bolstered its air defense along the Ukrainian border, demonstrating the region's heightened alertness.
Meanwhile, the B9 group, a strategic alliance of nine countries, reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine's defense during a press conference in Bucharest. Nato's secretary general, Mark Rutte, emphasized the need for a strong and united front against Russian aggression, stating that Russia remains the most significant threat to Nato and its allies.
As the situation unfolds, the international community is urged to stay vigilant and support Ukraine's fight for sovereignty and peace.
