Russian Artist Semyon Skrepetsky Killed in Poland

Murder of a Russian Artist in Poland

In a shocking incident, a Russian artist and vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin was shot dead in Poland on Monday morning. The artist, known as Semyon Skrepetsky, was found murdered in the city of Biała Podlaska, located about 40km from the Belarusian border.

The 44-year-old was shot multiple times in a car park, with five bullets striking him in the head, chest, and back. This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the artistic community and raised concerns about the safety of those who dare to speak out against powerful figures.

Who was Semyon Skrepetsky?

Semyon Skrepetsky was the pseudonym of Robert Kuzovkov, a Russian artist known for his satirical caricatures of politicians. His work often targeted controversial figures, including Putin, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Skrepetsky’s art was not just limited to paper; he was also an active participant in protests. Recently, he was seen at a Russia Day protest outside the Russian embassy in Berlin, carrying a painting caricaturing Putin and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

The Investigation Unfolds

Polish authorities are currently investigating the murder, with two Belarusian citizens detained near the consulate. Marcin Kozak, a spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin, provided details of the incident, stating that the artist was approached by an unidentified gunman who fired two shots, and then, as the victim fell, fired three more shots at close range before fleeing the scene.

The investigation has recovered five shell casings and one Geco 9mm Luger bullet from the crime scene, and an autopsy is scheduled to provide further insights into the case.

A Community in Mourning

The death of Semyon Skrepetsky has left a void in the artistic community, especially among those who use their art as a form of political expression. His work, which often satirized powerful leaders, was a bold statement in a world where speaking truth to power can be dangerous.

As the investigation continues, the hope is that justice will be served and that Skrepetsky’s legacy will inspire others to continue using their art as a powerful tool for change.
