Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Visionary Approach to Portraying Women

Indian actress Richa Chadha recently spoke about filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, praising his approach to portraying women on screen. In an interaction with Bollywood Bubble, Chadha shared her observations about Bhansali's personality and upbringing, and how it shapes his storytelling. "For Sanjay Sir, the fact that he is Sanjay Leela Bhansali is very important to him. That he gives respect to his mother and in everything that he chooses to do, he has taken her name. He was raised with his sister Bela. So it's the whole thing. Having loving women raise you and having that respect for women." Chadha noted that this perspective translates into the way female characters are written in his films. "And it shows in his work too. Whether it's like a woman in a male setup, like in Devdas, where Paro and Chandramukhi are sort of trapped by patriarchy. One is, you know, getting married. And one is, you know, trapped in the work conditions that she is. They both move the story forward. They are not props. And at the same time, there are other things that he does where women are directly leading the charge, like in Heeramandi or Gangubai Kathiawadi." Over the years, Bhansali's films have often featured women in central roles, whether navigating restrictive social structures or leading the narrative. Projects like Devdas, Heeramandi, and Gangubai Kathiawadi have explored varied female perspectives within distinct settings. Richa Chadha was part of Heeramandi, a period drama that marked Bhansali's debut in the long-format streaming space and received attention internationally following its release. Bhansali, known for his distinctive visual style and music-driven narratives, continues to remain active on the filmmaking front. He is currently working on his next project, Love and War, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal.

Bhansali's commitment to portraying strong female characters is a testament to his vision as a filmmaker. His ability to craft complex, multi-dimensional women has earned him a reputation as a master storyteller. As Richa Chadha noted, Bhansali's approach to portraying women is not merely a matter of aesthetics, but a reflection of his personal values and upbringing. By giving respect to his mother and incorporating strong female characters in his films, Bhansali has created a body of work that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant.
