Russian Warship Fires Warning Shots Near British Yacht
A British Couple’s Surreal Encounter
Imagine sailing peacefully in the English Channel when suddenly, a Russian warship fires warning shots near your yacht. This is exactly what happened to Jane and Alan Kelvey, a retired British couple, on Tuesday morning.
The Kelveys were sailing 23 miles off the Isle of Wight when they encountered the Russian frigate, Admiral Grigorovich. The warship fired into the path of their UK-registered yacht, an incident described as “isolated” by the Ministry of Defence.
A Conflicting Narrative
Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed the yacht was on a “dangerous approach” towards the warship, but the Kelveys strongly disagree. Jane Kelvey told BBC Newsnight, “We were definitely not on a collision course.”
The couple’s account reveals a series of events that led to the warning shots. After the warship sounded five blasts on its horn, the Kelveys altered their course to indicate they had seen the warship. But the situation escalated when the warship sounded another five blasts, followed by small arms fire.
The Russian Defence Ministry maintains its sailors acted in accordance with international shipping regulations.
A Calm Response
Despite the tense situation, the Kelveys remained remarkably calm. When asked if they were afraid, they calmly replied in the negative. Jane Kelvey even chuckled as she described taking cover during the gunfire.
This incident, occurring just days after Royal Marine Commandos intercepted a Russian shadow fleet tanker in the Channel, highlights the complex dynamics at play in international waters.
While the MoD considers the warning shots an isolated incident, it underscores the need for vigilance and adherence to international regulations.
As the Kelveys’ story spreads, it serves as a reminder of the importance of maritime safety and the potential for misunderstandings in such encounters.
