Russian Forces Infiltrate Strategic City in Ukraine’s Donbas Region

Russian Troops Advance in Kostyantynivka

Russian troops have made significant progress in infiltrating the strategic city of Kostyantynivka in eastern Ukraine, according to recent reports. The city, which serves as a gateway to the rest of the Donbas region, is now effectively in a “grey zone”, no longer controlled by either side.

A Ukrainian drone pilot, speaking anonymously, revealed, “They get into areas behind our backs, and in urban conditions, it’s challenging to push them out.” This infiltration has raised concerns about the potential impact on Ukraine’s defense.

The Battle for Donbas: A Key Objective

The capture of Kostyantynivka is a crucial part of Russia’s strategy to seize the Donbas region, one of the Kremlin’s primary goals in the ongoing war. If successful, Russian forces could push towards Ukraine’s remaining strongholds in the east, including the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

However, Ukrainian commanders remain optimistic, claiming they have recaptured more territory this year than they have lost, disrupting Moscow’s supply lines. This has led to fuel shortages in Crimea, as reported by Russian-appointed authorities.

A Complex Ground Situation

The situation on the ground is complex. While Moscow claims its forces are rapidly advancing and have encircled Ukrainian units, Kyiv denies these assertions. Brig Gen Oleksandr Bakulin, commander of Ukraine’s 19th Corp, maintains that “the situation remains under control.” However, he acknowledges the presence of Russian soldiers within the city.

A Ukrainian officer, speaking anonymously, shared, “We have clean-up and assault groups inside the city, but the Russians are accumulating more troops.” The dense urban environment, with buildings and trees providing cover, has made it challenging for Ukrainian forces to detect and target enemy movements.

Drone Warfare: A Strategic Challenge

Russian drone pilots have played a significant role in the battle for Kostyantynivka. They have focused on destroying Ukrainian drone launch sites, providing cover for their infantry troops. This strategy has allowed Russian forces to advance within the “kill zone” where Ukrainian drones can detect and attack any movement.

The Ukrainian drone pilot explained that while their drones target Russian infantry, enemy crews are not a priority for their counterparts. Instead, Russian forces use artillery and multiple rocket launchers to engage Ukrainian positions.

The Ukrainian officer emphasized the slow pace of the Russian advance, stating, “Sometimes they move just 100 meters a day.” Russian forces have adopted a strategy similar to their capture of other major cities in eastern Ukraine, aiming to surround Kostyantynivka and cut off supply routes.

A Major Challenge for Ukraine

The situation in Kostyantynivka has become a significant challenge for Ukraine. Delivering supplies has become increasingly difficult due to constant attacks on land routes and the interception of large logistical drones. The fall of the city is seen as a matter of time by some observers.

A Ukrainian soldier fighting in the city expressed concern about the lack of reinforcements and the reluctance of commanders to report lost positions. “We don’t have enough people to hold on to what we still control,” they said.

Despite the challenges, Ukrainian forces remain determined to defend the city. The drone pilot emphasized the need to adapt their approach, stating, “Unless we start targeting their logistics and pilots, they will continue advancing.” The battle for Kostyantynivka is a critical test of Ukraine’s resilience and strategic capabilities.
