Royal Marines Intercept Russian Oil Tanker in Historic Operation
UK Armed Forces Take Action in English Channel
In a significant move, Royal Marine Commandos, alongside National Crime Agency officers and RAF support, intercepted and boarded a Russian oil tanker in the early hours of Sunday. This marks the first operation of its kind by UK armed forces, targeting the so-called shadow fleet.
The vessel, named Smyrtos, will remain under watch off the south coast of England as investigations continue, according to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). This action sends a clear message to those involved in evading sanctions.
A Coordinated Effort
The operation, which took place in international waters, was the result of meticulous planning. Armed personnel were seen fast-roping from a helicopter onto the vessel, as shown in footage released by the MoD.
The UK’s actions are part of a broader strategy to disrupt Russia’s oil exports, which have been subject to international sanctions. The shadow fleet, consisting of over 700 vessels, plays a crucial role in transporting sanctioned oil, with the UK having sanctioned more than 500 of these ships.
Political Response and International Collaboration
Sir Keir Starmer praised the operation, stating it deals another blow to Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine. This sentiment was echoed by Attorney General Richard Hermer, who emphasized the government’s commitment to pursuing Russia’s shadow fleet under international law.
The operation also highlights the UK’s collaboration with allies. The MoD noted that the interception was conducted in coordination with France, building on recent support provided by the UK.
As the Smyrtos remains under watch, the UK’s actions serve as a powerful demonstration of its resolve to uphold sanctions and disrupt Russia’s oil trade.
