Accused Rapist Claims Innocence, Expresses Regret
In a compelling turn of events, Paul Quinn, 51, stands accused of a rape that occurred in 2003. The case has already resulted in a significant miscarriage of justice, as an innocent man, Andrew Malkinson, spent 17 years behind bars for the crime. Now, Quinn vehemently denies the allegations, claiming he could not live with himself if he had committed such an act.
The trial at Manchester Crown Court revealed that Quinn's DNA was found on the victim's vest and bra. When confronted with this evidence, Quinn admitted to being unfaithful to his wife 'hundreds of times' over a 16-year period, often engaging in unprotected sex with women he met during nights out. He suggested that this behavior might explain the presence of his DNA.
Quinn's online activities have also come under scrutiny. Jurors were informed that he conducted several searches about DNA evidence shortly after police identified a new suspect in July 2022. These searches included inquiries about DNA matches from skin and scenes, as well as the duration of DNA storage in databases. Quinn attributed these searches to general curiosity sparked by crime programs he watched.
The prosecution, led by John Price KC, argued that the timing and nature of Quinn's online searches indicated a keen interest in the case and a potential attempt to gather information. Price suggested that Quinn's increased visits to the Manchester Evening News website were not coincidental but rather a sign of his anxiety about the investigation.
When asked about his feelings regarding the rape allegation, Quinn expressed deep remorse for his past infidelity but maintained his innocence in the rape case. He stated that he would not be able to live with himself if he had committed such a heinous act. The trial continues, leaving the jury with the challenging task of determining the truth.
