Northumbria PC Jess Turnbull: A Life of Service
A Young Officer’s Tragic End
Northumbria Police Constable Jess Turnbull, aged 19, was struck by a vehicle while on duty, suffering catastrophic injuries that led to her passing two days later.
The inquest in Morpeth revealed that PC Turnbull was attending the scene of a crash on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington, Northumberland, on June 8.
She was hit by a black Mercedes while outside a stationary police car, which had been deployed to implement a road closure following a collision between a Land Rover Freelander and a Ford Explorer.
The incident occurred at 23:26 BST, and PC Turnbull was given CPR at the scene before being transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where she sadly passed away on June 10.
A Dedicated and Committed Officer
PC Turnbull’s dedication to her role was evident from the start, having joined Northumbria Police in September 2022, following in her father’s footsteps.
Her parents, Janice and Andy Turnbull, described their daughter as “our greatest pride and our greatest joy.” This sentiment was echoed by Northumbria Police, who praised her as a “dedicated and committed” officer.
The inquest, held at County Hall, heard that PC Turnbull and a colleague were originally sent to the scene of the initial crash on the southbound A189.
The Investigation Continues
The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation, with a 73-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail.
Officers have appealed for witnesses who may have seen a 09-registered black Mercedes Coupe CLC on the day of the incident, between 15:00 and 23:30, in Blyth, Cramlington, and surrounding areas.
As the investigation continues, the inquest has been adjourned until January 11, 2027, providing time for a thorough examination of the events leading up to this tragic loss.
Remembering PC Turnbull’s Legacy
PC Turnbull’s life and service will be remembered by her colleagues and the community she served.
Her dedication and commitment to her role as a police officer, at such a young age, serve as a reminder of the bravery and selflessness of those who choose to protect and serve.
As the investigation unfolds, we honor PC Turnbull’s memory and the impact she had on those around her.
