Midwestern US Braces for Severe Storms: Tornadoes, Hail, and Flooding
A significant weather event is unfolding across the midwestern United States, with severe thunderstorms and tornadoes impacting multiple states. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings, urging residents to take precautions as the storm system moves through.
According to the NWS, the storms are expected to bring large hail, with some hailstones reaching the size of baseballs and falling at incredible speeds of up to 107 mph. This poses a significant risk to property and residents alike.
The affected area stretches from Wisconsin to Oklahoma, with approximately 26 million people under tornado watches. The situation is so severe that a rare 'particularly dangerous situation' threat level has been assigned to tornadoes in Illinois and Wisconsin, highlighting the potential for extreme weather conditions.
Social media has been flooded with images and videos of the aftermath, showcasing the destructive power of these storms. In Stewartville, Minnesota, a video revealed the extent of the damage, with homes suffering broken windows and caved-in garage doors. Similar scenes were reported in Wisconsin, where the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office shared photos of a house with a damaged roof and debris scattered across the lawn.
This recent bout of severe weather follows a week of tornadoes, hail, and flooding in the region. Milwaukee experienced flash flooding that engulfed a freeway, stranding drivers and causing road closures. Tragically, a man in Waukesha, Wisconsin, lost his life after being struck by lightning during the thunderstorms.
In response to the ongoing weather crisis, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, mobilizing law enforcement, fire services, state agencies, and emergency response teams to provide assistance and support to affected communities.
