London Tragedy: Partner’s Fatal Stabbing and Gas Explosion
A tragic incident unfolded in London last summer, leaving a community in shock. Clifton George, 45, is accused of murdering his partner, Annabel Rook, in a violent outburst that ended in a gas explosion.
The court heard that on June 17, 2025, George and Rook, 46, were involved in an argument at their home in Stoke Newington. The prosecution alleges that George, in a fit of rage, punched and strangled Rook before fatally stabbing her at least 22 times, including through the heart.
The stabbing was followed by a gas explosion, which caused significant damage to the property and the neighboring house. The blast was so powerful that it lifted floorboards and shifted furniture, according to the court.
The prosecution's case, presented by William Emlyn Jones KC, revealed that George had tried to ignite the gas by flicking circuit breakers and leaving gas rings on, but it was a fire he started in the basement that ultimately caused the explosion.
The explosion prompted the couple's neighbors, Rhys Sullivan and Harriet Cosby, to rush outside. They found George lying on the kitchen floor, covered in blood and broken glass, attempting to stab himself. Sadly, Rook, the daughter of a retired judge, was found dead after the blast.
George has admitted to manslaughter but denies murder, claiming he 'lost it' when he discovered Rook had 'lied' to him. The court heard that the couple's relationship, which lasted over a decade, was described as 'difficult at times'.
The prosecution's focus is now on determining the reason for the fatal stabbing and the circumstances surrounding the explosion, as George's guilty plea to manslaughter has not been accepted.
