London Arson Attacks: Counter-Terrorism Unit Investigates

In a series of concerning incidents, London has witnessed three separate arson attacks on Iranian and Jewish targets, prompting a thorough investigation by the city's counter-terrorism unit. The attacks, which occurred within a short time frame, have raised suspicions of potential foreign state involvement, specifically the Iranian government.

The most recent incident took place on Wednesday evening, targeting the offices of Iran International, a Persian-language news channel that opposes the Tehran regime. A container was ignited and thrown into a car park at the company's premises in Wembley, but the fire was quickly extinguished.

Following a police pursuit, three individuals, including a 16-year-old boy and two men aged 19 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life. This incident followed an attempted firebomb attack on Finchley Reform Synagogue earlier that day and an arson attack on Jewish charity ambulances last month.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that all three incidents are being treated as separate cases, with the deputy commissioner, Matt Jukes, emphasizing that it is too early to speculate on the motives. However, he issued a stern warning to those who may be carrying out attacks on behalf of foreign states, stating that they will face severe consequences.

The investigation has revealed that some of the suspects have criminal backgrounds, and counter-terrorism experts have previously noted the use of criminal proxies by foreign states to perpetrate violence in the UK. The militant group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia has claimed responsibility for the ambulance attack and suggested involvement in the synagogue incident, as well as other attacks across Europe.

While the motives remain unclear, Iran International's editorial board has highlighted a recent rise in harassment targeting their journalists' relatives inside Iran, attributing it to an effort to restrict the free flow of information and deny the Iranian people access to independent news.
