In a heartwarming display of courage, 12-year-old Tamika has been hailed as a “little hero” after rescuing her friend, Sofia-Ann, from a potentially fatal situation at Pensarn beach in Abergele, Conwy.
The two friends were enjoying a day at the beach when they suddenly lost their footing and were dragged under the water.
Sofia-Ann, 14, had a seizure, but Tamika’s quick thinking saved the day. She grabbed Sofia-Ann’s long hair and pulled her to safety, ensuring her friend could breathe again.
A Mother’s Gratitude
Sofia-Ann’s mother, Jade McKenna, expressed her immense gratitude to Tamika, saying, “I’m so grateful for Tamika. She put herself in more danger to save Sofia-Ann. She’s my little hero.”
Jade recounted the terrifying incident, adding, “Thankfully Tamika acted quickly and grabbed Sofia by her hair, pulling her out of the water.”
The event occurred during the heatwave on May 28, when the coastguard received reports of three teenagers in distress, cut off by the tide.
A Community Response
The rescue operation involved multiple agencies, including rescue teams from Rhyl and Llandudno, North Wales Police, and the Welsh Ambulance Service.
Sofia-Ann was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan by ambulance, where she had water drained from her lungs and made a full recovery.
Jade also acknowledged the women at the beach who raised the alarm and provided assistance until the emergency services arrived.
A Friend’s Heroism
Tamika’s mother, Shantika, shared her shock at the incident, saying, “Tamika was also dragged under, but she focused on saving Sofia.”
She revealed that Jade had told her that without Tamika’s intervention, Sofia-Ann might not have survived.
Shantika’s admiration for her daughter’s bravery was evident, but she also shared her daughter’s fear of drowning, which will likely keep Tamika away from the beach for a while.
