Les Mills: Fitness Icon and Olympian Dies at 91
A Life Dedicated to Fitness and Service
Les Mills, the renowned fitness brand founder and former Olympian, has passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.
Mills, a New Zealander, began his journey in the fitness industry by opening a gym in Auckland with his late wife, Colleen, in 1968. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become a global fitness empire.
From Athlete to Entrepreneur
Mills’ athletic prowess was evident from an early age. He competed in shot put and discus at four Olympic Games, including the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and won five Commonwealth Games medals, with a gold in discus at Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966.
But it was his entrepreneurial spirit that truly set him apart. After establishing his first gym, Mills went on to create a nationwide chain, and eventually, the Les Mills International brand was born.
Choreographed Workouts Take Center Stage
The brand’s signature offering is its choreographed workouts set to music, such as Body Pump and Body Combat. These innovative classes have become a staple in gyms worldwide, inspiring countless individuals to embrace fitness.
Mills’ son, Phillip, who co-founded Les Mills International with partner Jackie, paid tribute to his father’s achievements, stating, “He achieved a huge amount in his life, and his spirit lives on in gym workouts around the world, continuing to help people fall in love with fitness.”
A Life of Service and Recognition
Beyond his business success, Mills dedicated himself to serving others. He served three terms as mayor of Auckland City in the 1990s, and his contributions to local government and sport were recognized with prestigious honors.
Mills was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2002 and a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1973 for his outstanding service.
Nicki Nicol, CEO of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, praised Mills’ impact, saying, “Les Mills set a standard for what it takes to represent New Zealand at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.”
As we remember Les Mills, we celebrate a life dedicated to fitness, entrepreneurship, and service, leaving an indelible mark on the world of health and wellness.
