BAFTA-Winning Director Lakshmipriya Devi’s Journey: From MBA Aspirant to Cinematic Storyteller

In a recent interview, Lakshmipriya Devi, the BAFTA-winning director of 'Boong', revealed her fascinating journey into the world of cinema. Devi's path to directing was not a conventional one, as she initially had no intention of pursuing a career in filmmaking.

Devi, who was preparing for MBA entrance exams, found her calling after participating in a quiz show hosted by Siddharth Basu. The experience sparked a desire to be part of the creative world, leading her to sell her MBA books and pursue filmmaking.

'Boong', Devi's debut feature, is a deeply personal project. She describes it as a sum total of her life experiences, almost like a diary. The film's success was a pleasant surprise, as Devi never imagined it would become a cinematic masterpiece.

When asked about her approach to storytelling, Devi emphasizes the importance of social, political, and cultural context. However, she believes that these elements should be incorporated naturally, driven by the story's demands rather than forced inclusion.

The director's casting process for 'Boong' was equally unique. Manipur's lack of a structured casting system led to a word-of-mouth search for the perfect child actor, resulting in the discovery of Gugun Kipgen, who stood out for his confidence and refusal to audition.

Devi's work challenges the perception of Manipur as a troubled paradise, aiming to spark curiosity and encourage exploration of the region. Her journey is a testament to the power of following one's passions and embracing the unexpected.
