Kenyan School Tragedy: 16 Girls Lose Lives in Dormitory Fire

A tragic incident has struck a girls' school in Kenya, resulting in the loss of at least 16 young lives. The fire broke out at the Utumishi girls academy in Gilgil, Nakuru county, about 76 miles north-west of Nairobi, in the early hours of Thursday morning. The students, aged between 15 and 18, were sleeping in the dormitory when the fire started on the second floor.

According to reports, the doors on that floor were initially locked, and some girls died while jumping out of the windows. Multiple survivors have told first responders that a student had lit a mattress with a match, although the motive behind this action remains unclear.

The Kenyan Red Cross has confirmed that several students have been evacuated and are receiving treatment in various hospitals, while a multi-agency response team, involving the county fire brigade, county disaster response teams, and Kenya Red Cross, remains ongoing.

President William Ruto has expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased, stating that his 'heart and prayers' are with them. He also emphasized the importance of supporting the affected families and students, while investigations continue into the cause of the fire.

This tragic incident is not an isolated one, as similar fires have occurred at schools in Kenya in recent years. In 2024, 21 boys lost their lives in a fire at a boarding school in central Kenya, while in 2017, nine girls died in a blaze at a school in Kibera, the largest slum in Nairobi.

As the nation mourns this devastating loss, efforts are being made to provide support to the affected families and students. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and preparedness in schools, and the need for immediate action to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

The Kenyan government has announced an investigation into the cause of the fire, with a focus on identifying the root causes and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

In the meantime, the nation comes together to offer condolences to the families of the deceased and to support the affected students and families.
