A Teacher’s Heinous Crime

In a tragic case that has shocked the nation, Jamie Varley, a 37-year-old teacher, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his adopted son, Preston Davey.

Preston, a 13-month-old baby boy, endured unimaginable suffering at the hands of Varley, who subjected him to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse during the final four months of his life.

The Abuse Uncovered

Varley’s heinous actions came to light when Preston was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in July 2023. Varley claimed the child had accidentally drowned in the bath, but a post-mortem examination revealed a shocking truth: Preston had suffered 40 injuries.

The court heard that during the four months Preston was in Varley’s care, he was routinely ill-treated, sexually abused, and physically assaulted, resulting in these traumatic injuries.

A Partner’s Complicity

Varley’s partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was also found guilty of sexual assault, child cruelty, and allowing the death of a child. He received a 25-year sentence.

The court heard that Preston’s biological mother and grandmother, Sarah and Debbie Davey, were present in the public gallery, their grief palpable as they sobbed throughout the hearing.

A Community’s Shock and Support

Preston’s foster mother, Sandra Cooper, described him as “joyful, content, and happy” during his time with her family. She and her husband, Paul, believed they were doing the right thing when they handed Preston over to Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley, never imagining the horrors that awaited the child.

The case has sent shockwaves through the community, with many questioning how such abuse could go unnoticed.

However, the focus now shifts to healing and justice. Preston’s biological mother, Sarah Davey, shared her pain in a powerful victim impact statement, emphasizing the unimaginable pain of wondering what her son endured. She vowed never to forgive Varley for robbing Preston of his future.

The Minister for Children, Families, and Wellbeing, Josh MaCalister, has ordered an independent safeguarding review to examine the case and ensure that lessons are learned to prevent similar tragedies.
