Jewish Community Stands Strong Against Far-Right Harassment

The Jewish community in the UK is facing a wave of antisemitism and conspiracy theories, but their commitment to helping refugees remains unwavering. Rabbi David Mason, a prominent refugee advocate and executive director of HIAS+JCORE, has pledged to continue their vital work, despite increasing hostility from far-right activists.

The rise in antisemitism is fueled by conspiracy theories, such as the 'great replacement' theory, which falsely accuses Jews of orchestrating migration to weaken Western societies. This dangerous rhetoric mirrors the beliefs of the gunman who attacked Jewish congregations in Pittsburgh, USA, in 2018, targeting Jews who supported refugees through organizations like HIAS.

Rabbi Mason's determination to stand against this hatred is inspiring. He sees the abuse as a badge of honor, driven by his faith and a vision of a cohesive Britain. The Jewish community's history of exile and refuge, he believes, should foster compassion for today's asylum seekers.

Jewish synagogues and community groups across the UK are actively supporting refugees, often behind the scenes due to security concerns and rising antisemitism. At least 60 synagogues and Jewish student societies are marking Shabbat with refugee-focused activities, including sermons, discussions, and exhibitions. Some even host monthly drop-ins and support groups for asylum seekers.

HIAS+JCORE's befriending program, Jump, is a shining example of this commitment. For 20 years, it has paired volunteer mentors with unaccompanied young refugees, offering social support and casework assistance. Ben, a volunteer mentor, describes the work as rewarding, providing a constant presence in the lives of these vulnerable young people.

Rabbi Mason acknowledges the challenges posed by recent events in Israel and Gaza, which have made interfaith work more difficult. However, he criticizes superficial 'celebrity interfaith' events, advocating for genuine collaboration between faith groups to address societal issues. He welcomes the Labour government's focus on social cohesion but expresses concern about recent asylum policies and rhetoric.
