Lebanon’s Environmental Minister Accuses Israel of Ecocide
Lebanon's Minister for the Environment has made a bold accusation against Israel's military, claiming an 'act of ecocide' in a new report. This report delves into the environmental consequences of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 2023-2024, revealing a grim picture of ecological devastation.
The report asserts that the Israeli military's actions have significantly altered both the physical and ecological landscapes of southern Lebanon. One of the most striking findings is the damage to 5,000 hectares of forest cover, including broadleaf, pine, and stone pine stands. This destruction has led to habitat loss, climate deregulation, and soil erosion, setting off a chain of environmental challenges.
The financial implications are equally concerning. The report estimates that $118 million worth of physical agriculture assets have been destroyed, encompassing crops, livestock facilities, forestry resources, fisheries, and aquaculture infrastructure. Furthermore, the disruption of harvests and reduced yields have resulted in additional losses of $586 million in agricultural production.
The destruction of orchards, olive groves, citrus plantations, and banana plantations, covering an area of 2,154 hectares, is another critical finding. This loss of fruit-bearing trees not only affects the local economy but also disrupts the region's ecological balance.
Soil contamination is another major concern. The report reveals high phosphorus concentrations, reaching up to 1,858 parts per million, in the soils of south Lebanon and the Bekaa valley in the east. Such contamination can have long-lasting effects on the region's agricultural productivity and biodiversity.
The report also highlights the widespread air pollution caused by the military activities, which extended beyond the immediate strike zones. This pollution included the release of particulates, sulphur and nitrogen oxides, and toxic compounds such as dioxins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, posing significant health risks to the local population.
This comprehensive report provides a detailed account of the environmental impact of the Israeli invasion, offering a stark reminder of the profound and lasting consequences of military actions on the natural world.
