Israel’s Evacuation Order: Beirut’s Southern Suburbs in Panic
The Israeli military has issued a sweeping evacuation order for Beirut's southern suburbs, a move that has sent shockwaves through the region. This area, a stronghold of the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah, is now facing an uncertain future as Israel steps up its military operations.
The order, communicated through the military's Arabic spokesperson on X, urged residents to "save your lives" and evacuate immediately. This unprecedented directive has led to a mass exodus, with huge traffic jams forming on roads heading north and south as people comply with the order.
The evacuation comes ahead of a much-anticipated ground incursion by Israeli forces, raising concerns about the safety of civilians in the area. The Israeli military has been targeting Hezbollah across Lebanon, with a particular focus on Beirut's southern suburbs, southern Lebanon, and the eastern Bekaa Valley.
The situation has escalated since Monday when Hezbollah launched rockets and drones over the border in retaliation for the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This has drawn Lebanon into the ongoing war between Israel, the US, and Iran, just 15 months after a ceasefire deal ended a year of intense fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
Hezbollah's leader, Naim Qassem, has vowed to confront Israel, while the Israeli military's chief of staff, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, has stated their determination to eliminate Hezbollah's threat. The Israeli military claims to have targeted several Hezbollah command centers in Beirut, alleging they were intended for attacks on Israeli troops and civilians.
The Lebanese health ministry reports at least three fatalities in Israeli air strikes, while the Israeli military claims to have killed several Hezbollah terrorists in southern Lebanon. The situation remains tense, with French President Emmanuel Macron calling for an end to hostilities and urging Hezbollah to cease fire and Israel to refrain from ground intervention.
