Israel Detains Gaza Aid Flotilla Near Crete
In a significant development, Israeli forces have intercepted and detained the crews of at least 22 boats from the Global Sumud Flotilla near the Greek island of Crete. The flotilla, consisting of around 58 vessels carrying individuals from over 70 countries, was on a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007.
The Global Sumud Flotilla organizers described the interception as a 'violent raid' and an 'unprecedented escalation', with activists being abducted in international waters, far from the shores of Gaza. Israeli authorities, however, maintain that the flotilla was organized by the Hamas terror organization and that the activists were offered to deliver aid through recognized channels.
Footage released by the flotilla organizers shows an Israeli navy officer urging the activists to change course and return to their port of origin. The flotilla responded on social media, stating that the Israeli navy's radio warning cannot drown out the calls for justice.
The interception has sparked international reactions, with Turkey's foreign ministry condemning the act as 'piracy' and a violation of humanitarian principles and international law. The UN special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza, Francesca Albanese, also questioned Israel's actions, while Italy's premier, Giorgia Meloni, called for the immediate release of Italian nationals onboard.
This incident follows a similar interception in October 2023, where Israel detained over 450 activists, including prominent figures like Greta Thunberg. The ongoing blockade and recent events highlight the complex humanitarian situation in Gaza and the challenges faced by international aid efforts.
