Iran Postpones Funeral Ceremony for Late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Amid Ongoing US-Israeli Strikes

Iran has postponed the funeral ceremony for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as US and Israeli forces continue intense strikes across the country. The ceremony, which was due to start on Wednesday night, has been delayed due to the high volume of requests to attend and the need to provide appropriate facilities for the mourners. According to an official, the infrastructure needed to be prepared to host the large number of people who wanted to pay their respects to the late leader.

The postponement of the funeral ceremony comes as the US and Israeli forces continue their assault on Iran, with the US Secretary of Defence, Pete Hegseth, saying that the US and Israeli forces would have total aerial superiority over Iran within days. Hegseth also announced that a US submarine had sunk an Iranian navy frigate in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of 80 people on board. The secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, responded by saying that US President Donald Trump had dragged the American people into an unjust war.

The US and Israeli strikes have resulted in significant damage and loss of life in Iran, with the Iranian state news agency reporting that over 1,000 military personnel and civilians have been killed since the start of the conflict. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has also reported that the number of civilian deaths, including children, has reached over 1,000. In response to the strikes, Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel and neighboring Arab states that host US military installations.

The conflict has also affected other countries in the region, with Kuwait reporting the death of an 11-year-old girl who was hit by falling shrapnel. Saudi Arabia has also reported an attempted drone attack on its largest oil refinery, while Turkey's defence ministry has announced that an Iranian missile heading towards its airspace had been intercepted by Nato air and missile defence systems. The IDF has also reported intercepting salvos of Iranian missiles, with no immediate reports of casualties.

The Assembly of Experts, the clerical body responsible for choosing a successor to Khamenei, says it is close to making a decision. Several candidates have been identified, including Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader's son, who is considered the front-runner to succeed him. Israel's defence minister has warned that any successor who continues to threaten Israel and the US would be an unequivocal target for elimination. The situation in Iran remains volatile, with the US and Israeli forces continuing their assault and Iran responding with missile and drone attacks. The international community is watching the situation closely, with many calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In the midst of the conflict, the Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has reached out to neighboring states, saying that Iran respects their sovereignty and believes that the region's security and stability can be achieved through collective efforts. However, Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, has rejected Iran's assertion that the missiles are directed solely at US interests, citing the strikes on civilian infrastructure and residential areas. The conflict has highlighted the complexities of the region and the need for a peaceful and diplomatic solution.

The US and Israeli forces have reported significant gains in their campaign against Iran, with the US military's Central Command saying that the campaign is ahead of schedule. The IDF has also reported several successful strikes against Iranian military targets, including the downing of an Iranian fighter jet by an F-35. The situation in Iran remains fluid, with the US and Israeli forces continuing their assault and Iran responding with missile and drone attacks. The world is watching the situation closely, with many calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and an end to the violence.
