India Rebukes Trump’s ‘Hellhole’ Comments
In a recent social media post, former US President Donald Trump shared a transcription of a conservative podcast host's remarks, sparking a diplomatic response from India.
The post, which included a video, described India as a 'hellhole' and made unsubstantiated claims about Indian immigrants in the tech industry, alleging discrimination against white native-born Americans and questioning their English proficiency.
India's foreign ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, issued a statement, categorically rejecting the comments as 'uninformed, inappropriate, and in poor taste'. He emphasized the strong foundation of mutual respect and shared interests that define the India-US relationship.
The opposition National Congress party also condemned the remarks, calling them 'extremely insulting and anti-Indian'.
The post caused a stir in the United States as well. The Hindu American Foundation expressed deep concern, labeling the comments as a 'hateful, racist screed'. They urged for an end to such rhetoric, citing the rising levels of xenophobia and racism in the country.
Congressman Ami Bera, a Democrat with Indian immigrant parents, criticized Trump's post as 'offensive and ignorant'. He highlighted the struggles faced by immigrant families, contrasting them with Trump's privileged background.
This incident comes amid a backdrop of strained relations between the two countries. Trump's administration has targeted Indian tech workers with visa restrictions and imposed high tariffs on Indian goods, allegedly due to India's purchase of Russian oil.
The upcoming visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio aims to ease tensions and restore the traditionally friendly ties between the two nations.
