Imtiaz Ali Breaks Silence on Main Vaapas Aaunga: A Poignant Partition Story

Imtiaz Ali's upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga has been generating buzz since its teaser release. The excitement has intensified with the recent collaboration of Diljit Dosanjh, A. R. Rahman, and Irshad Kamil for a new song.

Set against the backdrop of 1947, the film promises a poignant narrative that explores the historical subject through the prism of young romance. This approach sets Main Vaapas Aaunga apart from conventional Partition dramas.

Speaking about his decision, the filmmaker shared, ‘I never wanted to make a film on Partition if I had nothing unique to say. I did not want to report an incident.’

He further elaborated on the larger theme of migration and its emotional resonance, adding, ‘There has been a lot of influence in society, not only due to the 1947 Partition but also large-scale migration. I feel that migration is the story of the century for the entire world. For us, the most significant event in the Indian subcontinent is Partition, which affected the maximum number of people. It has affected them deeply and in many strange ways. But in retrospect, after 78 years, many things have been forgotten. What remains intensely remembered is the tenderness of early youth and romance, to which we return. It is such a story.’

The film brings together a compelling ensemble cast, including Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari Wagh, and Vedang Raina, alongside Diljit Dosanjh. With Imtiaz Ali at the helm, the narrative is expected to delve into themes of love, longing, and memory, all set within the turbulence of a defining historical moment.

Produced by Applause Entertainment and Window Seat Films, the film is slated for a theatrical release on June 12, 2026. As anticipation continues to build, Main Vaapas Aaunga is shaping up to be a poignant cinematic experience that merges history with deeply personal storytelling.
