Ian McKellen Leads March for LGBTQ+ Rights in Commonwealth
In a passionate display of solidarity, Sir Ian McKellen, the iconic actor known for his roles in 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'X-Men', joined a march in central London to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in Commonwealth countries. The protest, organized by the Peter Tatchell Foundation and the Out and Proud African LGBTI Network, aimed to shed light on the ongoing criminalization of same-sex relationships in 29 countries within the Commonwealth.
McKellen, a prominent LGBTQ+ activist, emphasized the urgent need for change, calling the situation "appalling." He highlighted the historical context, explaining how British colonial laws criminalizing homosexuality were imposed on these countries and have yet to be repealed. While the UK has progressed in its LGBTQ+ rights, many Commonwealth nations still enforce these outdated laws.
The march, dubbed the "Commonwealth Walk of Shame," saw protesters gather outside the high commissions of eight countries with anti-LGBTQ+ legislation: Nigeria, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Trinidad and Tobago, Ghana, Jamaica, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. McKellen expressed hope that the demonstration would send a message of support to those living in fear due to these discriminatory laws.
Addressing the crowd, McKellen stressed that the protest was not about hatred but a celebration of justice and equality. He attributed the anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment in Africa and Asia to the legacy of cruel colonial laws, which he believes should be a focus of discussion within the Commonwealth.
The actor's presence and powerful words added a significant boost to the march, drawing attention to the lack of progress in this area. The organizers and participants hope that this demonstration will encourage Commonwealth leaders to address this critical issue and work towards ensuring equal rights for LGBTQ+ individuals across the Commonwealth.
