In a swift response to criticism, Hampshire Cricket have decided that New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the club in their remaining County Championship matches.

The club initially named Kuggeleijn in their squad for a Championship match against Warwickshire, but faced a backlash on social media due to the player’s past legal issues.

A Controversial Signing

Kuggeleijn, 34, faced a rape charge in 2015, and after a re-trial due to a hung jury, he was acquitted in 2017.

His potential involvement with Hampshire sparked a swift and vocal response from fans and staff, leading to a U-turn by the club.

Less than an hour before the start of play on Wednesday, Hampshire announced that Kuggeleijn would not be taking part in their final four games of the season.

They went on to thank their passionate fanbase and emphasized their focus on the remaining fixtures.

Kuggeleijn’s Career

The seam bowler has had a successful career in his home country, spending 12 years with Northern Districts.

He has also represented New Zealand in various formats, including three Test matches, two ODIs, and 18 T20s.

Hampshire’s Season So Far

As the County Championship season nears its conclusion, Hampshire find themselves at the bottom of Division One with 86 points, 16 points behind Leicestershire.

The club has struggled this season, winning only twice with the red ball, losing five times, and drawing three.
