Breaking: Haiti Gang Violence Claims Over 70 Lives, Thousands Displaced

A recent gang attack in Haiti's breadbasket Artibonite region has resulted in a tragic loss of life, with at least 70 people killed and 30 injured. The Collective Defending Human Rights group has reported a significantly higher death toll than the initial reports from police and civil protection authorities, which stated 16 dead and 10 injured, and 17 dead and 19 wounded, respectively.
The attack occurred on Sunday in the Jean-Denis area, with armed members of the Gran Grif gang targeting the region at approximately 3am. The Artibonite department, a key agricultural area, has seen some of Haiti's worst violence as gang conflict spreads beyond the capital, Port-au-Prince.
In response to the attack, the UN secretary general has strongly condemned the gang violence, urging a thorough investigation into the security situation in the country. The violence has also prompted a humanitarian response, with nearly 6,000 people forced to flee their homes.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Haiti, which has seen over a million people displaced by conflict with gangs. The situation has exacerbated food insecurity, with close to 20,000 people reported killed in Haiti since 2021.
Efforts to address the security situation in Haiti are ongoing, with the US offering a reward of up to $3m for information on the financial activities of the Gran Grif and Viv Ansanm groups, which have been designated as terrorist organisations.
