The Bicer family was returning to Turkey after a holiday on the Mediterranean island. The privately-owned ferry, carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, left Kyrenia, a popular holiday resort, at around 12:30 local time.
The vessel was scheduled to travel to Turkey on Saturday but was delayed due to severe storms. Despite the rough seas, the ferry set sail on Sunday, only to encounter more challenges.
Eyewitness Accounts and Official Statements
Eyewitnesses describe a violent jolt before the ferry slammed onto the sea surface, with part of its bow bursting open. Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), stated that the boat was hit by two waves, causing it to capsize.
The TRNC, which controls the northern third of Cyprus, has declared a three-day period of national mourning, while authorities work to recover the vessel’s black box recorder to understand the full sequence of events.
A Complex Rescue Operation
The ferry, a high-speed 40-meter-long vessel, has completely sunk, lying at a depth of 514 meters. Debris, including a suitcase and a sheet of steel, floats on the surface, a stark contrast to the hopeful atmosphere at the port in Kyrenia, where survivors await news.
A ship from Turkey is expected to arrive on Tuesday to assist in the search efforts, offering a glimmer of hope to the families.
