Former Tory Minister Fined for Drug Possession
Former prisons minister Crispin Blunt has been fined £1,200 for drug possession, including crystal meth, cannabis, and sedatives. The ex-Tory MP for Reigate pleaded guilty to four drug charges after a police raid on his Surrey home in October 2023.
Blunt, 65, admitted to hosting drug-fueled chemsex parties at his residence, stating that he wanted to gain firsthand experience to inform government policy. He criticized the decision to charge him and advocated for the legalization of all drugs.
The court heard that the police investigation began after a chemsex party at Blunt's home in September 2023. Officers found crystal meth, a crystal meth and amphetamine mix, and a syringe containing GBL, a sedative.
Blunt, who represented himself in court, claimed he was a victim of blackmail and extortion by his drug dealer, who accused him of rape. Despite an 18-month investigation, no charges were brought against Blunt regarding the rape allegation.
Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram fined Blunt, acknowledging his views on drug policy but emphasizing the importance of upholding the law. Ikram highlighted that Blunt's actions undermined public trust in parliamentarians.
Blunt argued that criminal charges should not have been brought against him, suggesting that his political views on drugs, trans rights, and support for Palestinians might have influenced the case. He also mentioned being blackmailed by a builder who supplied drugs and demanded money, claiming rape.
Blunt, a Sandhurst graduate and former army officer, served in David Cameron's government and chaired the foreign affairs committee. He lost the Tory whip upon his arrest and stepped down from parliament in the 2024 general election.
