EU Offers Lifeline to Ukraine with €90 Billion Loan
The European Union is set to provide a major economic boost to Ukraine, releasing a €90 billion loan in the second quarter. This move comes as part of the bloc's efforts to support Ukraine in its defence against Russia.
EU economy commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis made the announcement during the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's spring meetings in Washington. He highlighted the importance of continued pressure and sanctions against Russia, stating that the country is 'emerging as a winner from this war in Iran, because it provides windfall profits to feed Russia's war machine'.
The loan is seen as a key step in bolstering Ukraine's economy, which has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict. European nations are also scrambling to bolster their militaries in the face of Russia's aggression, with the EU and Nato working together to increase arms production.
The situation in Ukraine remains precarious, with Russian forces continuing to launch drone and missile attacks on civilian areas. Despite this, the EU remains committed to supporting Ukraine, with officials emphasizing the need for solidarity and cooperation in the face of Russian aggression.
