Security Guards to Patrol Essex Towns Near Asylum Seeker Base

Operation Vanguard: A Community Initiative

In a move to address community concerns, Essex County Council has announced the launch of Operation Vanguard, a three-month trial involving security patrols in three key Essex towns.

Starting Monday, six trained security operatives will be deployed in Braintree, Colchester, and Chelmsford, providing a visible presence from 10:00 to 18:00 daily.

The initiative aims to address concerns raised by residents, particularly women and girls, regarding gatherings of male migrants in town centres.

Peter Harris, the council leader, emphasized that the safety of Essex residents is the top priority.

Community Safety: A Collaborative Effort

The patrols are a direct response to feedback from local residents, who have expressed concerns about the impact of the asylum seeker base on their communities.

Essex Police Chief Constable Rachel Nolan has assured the public that crime linked to the large asylum accommodation is very low, but the council is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

The scheme has sparked mixed reactions, with some councillors expressing concerns about potential community divisions. David King, a senior Liberal Democrat councillor, suggested that the security officers should integrate with existing arrangements to avoid creating a sense of otherness.

However, Conservative councillor Lee Scott offered a more positive perspective, stating that the scheme is being monitored to assess its effectiveness in making people feel safe.

A Balanced Approach to Community Well-being

The council has emphasized that the trial is a balanced approach to community well-being, aiming to deter anti-social behavior and provide reassurance to residents and businesses.

Funding for the initiative will be drawn from the community innovation and improvement fund, ensuring no additional cost to taxpayers or increases in council tax.

As the trial progresses, the council will gather evidence to determine if further support is required to maintain a harmonious and safe environment for all residents, regardless of their background.
