Essex Asylum Hotel Protest: Violent Disorder Convictions
Three Men Found Guilty of Violent Disorder
Three men have been convicted of violent disorder during protests outside an asylum hotel in Epping, Essex. The incident occurred on 17 July 2022, when a large crowd gathered after a migrant living at the hotel was charged with sex offences.
Keith Silk (33), Jonathan Glover (47), and Charlie Land (24) were identified as part of an aggressive mob by Chelmsford Crown Court. The defendants, from Essex and Hertfordshire, will be sentenced on 19 August.
Peaceful Protest Turns Violent
Prosecutors described the protest as initially peaceful, but it took a turn for the worse at around 5:30 pm. The arrival of counter-demonstrators sparked clashes between the two groups.
Silk, from Loughton, was captured on camera throwing a bottle at a police vehicle and attempting to pull down a hotel sign. Land, from Hatfield, smashed a police vehicle’s windscreen and ripped off wing mirrors, while Glover, from Waltham Abbey, confronted and scuffled with officers.
The court heard that Glover lost two teeth when an officer pushed him back with a riot shield.
Policing Costs and Safety Concerns
The scenes were described by a senior police officer as the worst he’d witnessed in his two-decade career. Several other individuals have also been convicted in connection with the July 17th demonstrations.
The Essex police force has reported that the repeated protests last summer cost a significant £1.54 million to police.
In a recent development, the Home Office announced fire safety concerns at the Bell Hotel, leading to the removal of all asylum seekers.
As the legal process continues, the community is left to reflect on the events and the impact on the town.
