England Fans in the US: A Once-in-a-Lifetime World Cup Experience

England’s World Cup Adventure

England fans in the US are having a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience as they cheer on the Three Lions in the World Cup. With the team through to the knockout stages, the atmosphere is electric, and fans from across Yorkshire are among the thousands in New Jersey, ready to roar their support.

John Hemmingham, a Sheffield Wednesday fan and leader of the England Band, captures the spirit: “Everywhere we go, everybody has a smile. Fans from all over the world are interacting, which is what the World Cup is about.”

Scarborough’s Flag-Bearers

Scarborough’s Danny Williams and Joe Gallagher have been popular figures in Thomas Tuchel’s travelling army. Their flag, showcasing the North Yorkshire seaside resort, has been a hit in Dallas and Boston. “It’s had a good reception,” says Williams, proud of representing home.

Despite initial concerns about local interest and potential hostility, the pair found Americans “friendly and up for the banter.” Williams adds, “America is beautiful, and the results are half-decent.” However, the high ticket prices for the final have them considering their options.

The Cost of a Dream

The cost of attending the World Cup is a talking point. Barnsley fan Ben Wade, back from his first World Cup, admits it was pricier than expected. He paid $265 to watch England vs. Croatia, and a pint in Texas heat cost $20. But Wade has no regrets, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience.

Terry Rose, a semi-retired pub landlord, is a veteran of following England. He’s booked tickets for the last 16, quarter-final, semi-final, and final, confident in England’s chances. “It’s like a holiday with your mates,” he says. “I’ve spent a lot, but it’s worth every penny.”

As the World Cup continues, England fans in the US are living their dreams, celebrating football and the joy it brings.
